n8n was the right answer at that stage. Self-hosted, open source automation, real branching, a community that actually ships nodes. For a year or two it was the only sensible no-code platform for anyone who could read a Docker file. It still is, for the right job.

The honest read: n8n is a great glue layer for low-volume internal automations and a great prototyping tool. It stops being the right answer the moment a single flow becomes the product, or a piece of the product. That is the migration moment.

When you've outgrown n8n

Six symptoms that mean you outgrew n8n

These are the patterns I hear on the first call, almost word for word. If three or more match, you are not looking for a better no-code tool. You are looking for an n8n alternative that is, frankly, just code.

1. You are watching Docker bills climb for an editor you barely open

Self-hosted n8n needs a worker pool sized for your peak load, not your average. If your workflow spikes during a content push and idles the rest of the week, you are paying for capacity you do not use. Serverless functions bill you for the seconds they actually run. For most marketing-team automations, that is a 60–80% reduction in infra spend before counting model costs.

2. Debugging a failed run takes hours, not minutes

The executions panel is fine for happy paths. It is rough when an AI node returned malformed JSON three nodes ago, you have no source map, and you are clicking through pinned data trying to reconstruct the state. Real code gives you a stack trace, a structured log, and a test you can run locally. The first time you re-run a failed pipeline against the actual broken input in under a minute, you stop looking back.

3. Multi-model AI routing is impossible without ugly workarounds

n8n's AI nodes are tied to one provider per node. Real production AI flows route per task — Claude for long-context reasoning, GPT for structured extraction, a small fast model for classification. In n8n that is a switch node, three branches, three credentials, and three places to break. In code it is fifteen lines. A multi-model AI pipeline I built solo runs four providers in one request and costs less than the equivalent n8n workflow ran on a single premium model.

4. Custom integrations you need do not exist as nodes

Every n8n user eventually needs the integration that is not in the catalog. The HTTP Request node works, but now you are writing JavaScript inside a code node, calling an API, parsing the response, and shoving it into the next node by hand. At that point you are already writing code. You are just writing it in the worst possible editor with the worst possible debugger.

5. You cannot version-control workflow JSON like real code

Trying to git-diff a workflow.json is a special kind of pain. Node positions move, IDs shift, the diff is unreadable. Code review on a 40-node flow is functionally impossible — your reviewer is squinting at coordinate changes. With real code, a pull request shows what actually changed: three lines in the prompt, one new branch, a retry policy. Reviews go from theatre to useful.

6. Latency at scale is killing the user experience

n8n adds overhead per node. For a sequential flow with twelve AI calls, you are paying that tax twelve times. Real code can parallelize independent calls, stream partial results, and shave seconds off perceived latency. When the workflow is user-facing — a content brief generator, a creator-vetting pipeline — that delta is the difference between a tool people use and a tool they avoid.

Treat the migration like a translation, not a redesign. Step one is exporting your existing workflow JSON and walking through it together so the load-bearing branches are clear and the leftovers from an experiment three months ago can go. Most n8n flows shrink by 30–50% in the rewrite simply because half the nodes are duct tape that real code does not need.

The build itself is opinionated. TypeScript on Node, deployed to Vercel functions or your existing cloud — your choice, your account. State goes into Postgres or Supabase, also yours. AI calls go through a thin router layer with Claude as the default and fallbacks to a GPT-class model or a cheaper variant based on the task. Retries, timeouts, and budget caps are wired in from day one, not bolted on after the first incident.

How do I know when I have actually outgrown n8n?

Three signals usually show up together. First, a single workflow has more than 30 nodes and you stop being able to picture it in your head. Second, you spend more time chasing failed runs in the executions panel than you spend designing new automations. Third, your hosting and queue costs are no longer trivial — you are paying for a worker pool that exists to keep up with your own AI calls. When two of those three are true, the n8n alternative is not another no-code tool. It is real code with a proper job queue and proper observability.

Is RDTS an open source n8n alternative?

No, and that is on purpose. I am not building a product that competes with n8n on its own turf. I build a custom service that does the specific job your workflow was doing, in plain TypeScript or Python, deployed to your infrastructure. You get the source code at the end, so it is open in the sense that matters: you can read every line, fork it, and hire anyone to maintain it. If you want a self-hostable visual editor with a community, n8n is still that. I am the option for when the visual editor is the bottleneck.
